Disk Read Error

Disk read error is a pre-boot error which can arise before your operating system starts booting. The error description may ask you to restart the machine by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete. But the most annoying thing is that the next time your computer is started, the same screen appears no matter you have selected Hard Disk or CD ROM as your First Boot Device.

In this article, we are going through a few solutions that are frequently used to deal with the said error.

1. Repair Master Boot Record
2. Fix Registry Records
3. Use Different IDE Cable
4. Try Different Hard Disk
5. Set BIOS Defaults

Repair Master Boot Record
The Master Boot Record is placed on storage devices like your hard disk which holds the partition table. Its ultimate objective is to bootstrap your operating system by storing descriptions of partitions made in a specific hard disk drive.
Disk Read Error may arise because of corrupted Master Boot Record (MBR). By repairing it, the problem might be fixed.
1.  Restart the computer by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
2. Insert Windows installation disc.
3. Set First Boot Device to your CD ROM and Second Boot Device as your Hard Disk. Save the settings and restart the machine again.
4. When asked to press any key, follow it.
5. On the first page, click Install Now.
6. Select your language, time and currency format and keyboard & input methods. Then click Next.
7. Click Repair your computer link and in new dialog select Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select the problematic version of Windows and click Next.
8. Click Command Prompt link, type the following commands one by one:
Diskpart
Select Disk 0
List Volume
Exit

<Your Drive Letter, For example, J:>

CD Boot

Dir

BootSect /NT60 SYS /MBR

Exit

9 Finally, click Shutdown.

10. Restart your computer.

Fix Registry Records
System Registry is a complex database that contains different types of information. Because of corruption in the records of the registry, Disk Read Error starts appearing. Start full scan using a Registry Cleaner software. Repair these corrupted registry entries from the scan results.

Use Different IDE Cable
IDE Cables
The word IDE is an acronym for Integrated Driver Electronics. It is frequently used to connect hard disk and CD ROMs with the motherboard.
When the IDE Cable is not working properly, Disk Read Error starts arising. Try a different IDE cable and restart your machine.

Try Different Hard Disk
A Dying Hard Disk
Bad sectors in your hard disk can also cause Disk Read Error. Temporarily, remove your hard disk, connect the hard disk of your friend and make it as a Primary Hard Disk and the First Boot Device. If the computer works fine, then the problem lies in your own hard disk and it is failing.

Set BIOS Defaults
Apply default BIOS settings and restart your machine. There is a possibility that your BIOS settings are improperly changed leading Disk Read Error. Set them to their defaults by following the steps given below:

1. Restart the machine.
2.  Press Delete or F2 key repeatedly.
3. Click Exit menu, select Load Optimum Defaults. Press ENTER.
4. The system will automatically restart and no error will appear when it will start.

How to Transfer Programs from One Computer to Another

After buying a new computer a lot of people want to transfer their programs & files from the old to the new computer. But the only problem is that they have a number of programs installed and family photo albums, music & other stuff stored that they don’t want to lose while making the transfer process quicker. Of course, it is not a simple task. While I was searching for a solution, I came across PCMover- an automatic file transfer software.

PCMover
(Transfer Programs & Files from One Computer to Another)
A file transfer software can be used for two purposes. Firstly, for making the transfer of all/ selected programs, applications and games. Secondly, for transferring your documents, music, videos, & other stuff without hassle. The main advantage of using such file transferring software is that there is no need to manually check-out the things once you give command to that program. In other words, by simply just selecting programs and files, the entire task will be done without needing your physical presence and attention. On the other hand, as all of us know selecting, copying and pasting data from one computer to another waste a lot of time. Additionally, in the manual transfer, there is no guarantee that the transferred programs would work because transfer of associated registry information is impossible.

We’ll here see how to transfer programs from one computer to another, obviously using an automatic file transfer software.

Transfer Programs the Easy Way Now!

Select a Transfer Medium:
Before going through the actual procedure, you need to have any of the following components so the actual transfer procedure can take place.
·         An External Hard Disk
·         CD/ DVD Disc
·         A USB Drive
·         Local Area Network (LAN)
·         EasyTransfer Cable

How to Transfer Programs from One Computer to Another?
If you have decided the transfer medium, do the steps given below:
  1. Download PCMover from its official website.
  2. Double click the downloaded file and continue with its installation. On successful completion, reboot your computer.
  3. Make sure no other programs are running. Open PCMover by double clicking its desktop shortcut.

  5. Read the important information given in the next page that appears. To confirm you have read it, check-up the box labelled I have read and understand this message. Then click Next.
  6. In the next page, there will be 3 options- Migration, Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant and Image Assistant. Since you have to transfer programs and files to a new computer, select the first option that is Migration. Click Next.
  7. It will ask you whether it’s a new or old computer. Choose Old Computer option and click Next.
  8. Select the medium of transfer as you decided earlier. The simplest medium is using a USB Cable.
  9. Depending upon the medium of transfer you selected, make sure that the appropriate cable is connected, CD/ DVD is inserted or the network connection is established. Then click Next to continue.
  10. Click Next again.
  11. The wizard will start searching for the applications which can be possibly transferred. Select those programs that you have to transfer to the other PC and continue it till the end. Steps vary according to the transfer medium you had selected.
  12. When you are finished, let’s move to your new PC! Install PCMover on your new PC and run it.
  13. Repeat the above Steps 3-6.
  14. Select New Computer option and click Next.
  15. Again, click Next without downloading the advertised products. Continue the wizard your own.
